[Meaning] delicate. [sc. The term is derived] from smoothness [leio/ths]. (For a "lily" [is] the flower [of that name].) [But others define it as] soft, pleasant, sweet.
Greek Original:
*leirio/enta: a(pala/. para\ th\n leio/thta. lei/rion ga\r to\ a)/nqos proshnh=, terpna/, h(de/a.
Likewise or similarly in other lexica, including Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon (see the references at Photius lambda152 Theodoridis), and in a scholion on Homer, Iliad 3.152, where leirio/essan is applied figuratively to the sound of cicadas. The present headword leirio/enta comes from 13.830, where Hector uses it contemptuously of Ajax's lily-white skin. Compression of earlier versions of the entry -- see esp. those of Apollonius and Hesychius -- has produced grammatical confusion in the later ones.
