Adler number: lambda,162
Translated headword: to vegetable-gather
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning to collect vegetables; [sc. formed] like to wood-gather and to kindling-gather.
Greek Original:
*laxani/zesqai: a)nti\ tou= la/xana sulle/gein: w(s culi/zesqai kai\ frugani/zesqai.
Notes:
Same entry in Photius, Lexicon lambda124 Theodoridis; cf. Etymologicum Magnum 558.14. This middle voice of the verb laxani/zein is otherwise unattested.
Greek la/xanon, vegetable (lambda 164), yields a number of compounds (cf. lambda 160, lambda 161, lambda 163), more than English. English 'graze', originally related to 'grass', is an example of the process, but it is really impossible to illustrate the Greek compounds, each a single word, in English. For kindling see phi 749.
