Adler number: kappa,652
Translated headword: probing
Vetting Status: high
To probe [μηλῶσαι ] is what the physicians call inserting a probe somewhere. There was also a certain proverb in reference to those who conjecture about unknown matters. Dyeing fleeces is also called καταμηλοῦν ["plunging"], when they are moved and pressed down.
Similar entry already in Hesychius (kappa1266, s.v. καταμηλῶσα1 ) and in Pollux 4.181. Photius has the Suda's entry but under the headword καταμηλῶν , as translated here; cf. kappa 649. The Suda's headword as transmitted is καταμήλην (ms G) or καταμίλην , the latter appropriate to alphabetical order.
Besides kappa 649, cf. also kappa 1518, mu 940, mu 1059.
