Headword: *kampu/la to/ca
Adler number: kappa,296
Translated headword: curved bow
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Homer [sc. uses the phrase]. He mixed together talk of the bow with that of the arrows. For the bow [is] "curved", that is, bent; while the arrows "fell here and there".[1] Similarly 'choinix' [describes] both the measure and the thing measured, and 'kotyle' likewise.[2]
Greek Original:
*kampu/la to/ca: *(/omhros. sune/mice to\n kata\ tou= to/cou lo/gon tw=| kata\ tw=n belw=n. kampu/la me\n ga\r ta\ to/ca, toute/stin e)pikamph=|: peptho/ta de\ a)/lludis a)/llh ta\ be/lh. w(s xoi=nic to\ me/tron kai\ to\ metrou/menon, kai\ kotu/lh o(moi/ws.
Notes:
The headword phrase is (neuter) plural, but its noun, as LSJ notes s.v., is frequently in plural for singular.
As Adler notes, this entry closely resembles the scholion (A) to Homer, Iliad 21.502-3 (web address 1) attributed to Aristonicus. There the verb is me/mixe not sune/mice, while Erbse cites the Suda text as e)pikamph=, which is the correct form.
[1] "A formular phrase that does not precisely suit its context, as it must refer to bow and arrows together" (Richardson ad loc).
[2] The choinix and the kotyle were units of dry measure (roughly equivalent to a quart and a cup, respectively), and also the name for vessels of approximately that size; cf. kappa 2166, chi 591.
