Adler number: kappa,2770
Translated headword: Kyrsilos, Cyrsilus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name; [that of a man] whom [the] Athenians killed, because he was advising them to submit to [the] Persians.
Greek Original:
*kursi/los: o)/noma ku/rion: o(\n *)aqhnai=oi kate/leusan, dio/ti u(pakou/ein *pe/rsais prou)tre/peto.
Notes:
A summary of Harpokration s.v. Kyrsilon, i.e. the accusative case of the name, as used in Demosthenes 18.204.
This Suda entry is out of alphabetical order in its present position, that of most of the manuscripts; the explanation may be that in an earlier stage of transmission the name was *kurqi/los.
If (as it is orthodox to assume) this is the episode described in Herodotus 9.5, this individual -- a member of the Athenian council in 480/79 -- was actually called Lykides (web address 1). Develin 64 suggests that "Kyrsilos" (via Demosthenes, in Cicero as well as here) is a derogatory nickname.
