Headword: *ku/kloi
Adler number: kappa,2654
Translated headword: zones, circles
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Zones] in the sky are five: Arctic, which is always visible; Winter; summer Tropic; Equatorial; invisible Antarctic. They are called 'parallels', because they do not incline towards one another; they are inscribed, however, about the same center. But the Zodiac is oblique, as responsible to the parallels.[1]
'Circles' is what places were called in which people were sold; they were given this name because those who are being sold stand in a circle.[2]

[1] Stoic definitions from Diogenes Laertius 7.155. The final phrase as given by the Suda appears more intelligibly in D.L.: "crossing the parallels", e)piw\n tou\s parallh/lous. Cf. zeta 137.
[2] This additional paragraph reproduces Harpokration s.v., where Dinarchus (fr. XI.3 Conomis) and Menander (fr. 171 Koerte, now 150 Kassel-Austin) are cited for the usage.
