Headword: *kte/na
Adler number: kappa,2513
Translated headword: comb
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the boxwood adorner of the hair. In the Epigrams: "[...] and snarer of the hair, a boxwood comb."[1]
Also [sc. attested] in the neuter kte/nnion.[2]
Greek Original:
*kte/na: to\ pu/cinon ka/luntron tw=n trixw=n. e)n *)epigra/mmasi: h)de\ tw=n trixw=n saghneuth=ra, pu/cinon kte/na. kai\ ou)dete/rws *kte/nnion.
Notes:
The headword is in the accusative case of the noun ktei/s (kappa 2515), presumably extracted from the quotation given. The reference to boxwood in the gloss would also seem to be specific to the quotation.
[1] Greek Anthology 6.211.4-5 (Leonidas of Tarentum), a dedication of a woman's personal articles to Aphrodite; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 107) and (vol. II, 310-311). The Suda alters the epigram's wording a bit; the received text in fact reads to\n platu/n trixw=n saghneuth=ra, the adjective platu/n, in the masculine accusative singular, applying to kte/na at the end of the fifth line; thus, a broad boxwood comb; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 107).
[2] Probably attested only here, though Adler notes something comparable in the Ambrosian Lexicon (1747).
