[Meaning] narrow places [sc. providing shelter] against storms, and strongholds, and a place of refuge. Some say that the Cretans ruling the sea along with King Minos[1] fled from the islanders into certain caves. Hence those places were called *krhsfu/geta ("Cretan refuges").
