Those who took the place of the Geomoroi ["land-sharers"] in Syracuse, a great mass of them -- these men were slaves of the exiles, according to Timaeus in [book] 6;[1] hence the overwhelming majority they used to call Kallikyrioi. They were named after the fact that, though diverse, they came together at the same place, according to Aristotle in the Constitution of the Syracusans;[2] [they are] like the Spartans' Helots and the Penestai in Thessaly and the Elarotai [= Klarotai] in Crete.
And [there is] a proverb: "more than Kallikyrioi". This used to be said if ever they wanted to give the appearance of a mass. For the Kallikyrioi were slaves, more numerous than their masters [kyrioi], so that they threw them out.[3]
