Headword: *koloku/nth
Adler number: kappa,1945
Translated headword: gourd, calabash
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning a] marike.[1] And [there is] a proverb: "healthier than a calabash."[2]
Greek Original:
*koloku/nth: mari/kh. kai\ paroimi/a: *koloku/nths u(gie/steros.
Notes:
[1] LSJ identify the koloku/nqh or koloku/nth as Cucurbita maxima; but [RA] this cannot be correct, since squash and pumpkins are New World plants (Kumar, pp. 6-11). It could be the bottle gourd or calabash, Lagenaria siceraria, of African origin (ibid., p. 11). The glossing noun is attested only in lexicography, as the gloss for koloku/nth.
