Adler number: kappa,1439
Translated headword: Keuthonymos' fame -- or shame
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to those who have a shameful fame; or if someone were to conceal his name;[1] or [the name of someone] ill-named.
Greek Original:
*keuqwnu/mou kle/os, h)\ ai)=sxos: e)pi\ tw=n ai)/sxion kle/os e)xo/ntwn: h)\ a)/n tis e)pikru/yeie to\ o)/noma: h)\ duswnu/mou.
Notes:
Slightly more fully in Zenobius 4.72. The only attested Keuthonymos -- Kythonymos in Zenobius, and cf. Hesychius kappa4448, but apparently lower-case there -- is the father of the herdsman Menoites in the myth of Heracles' Labours, but nothing is known of E. himself; hence the struggle, here, to interpret the proverb.
[1] This attempt at explanation is etymological; cf. generally kappa 1435, kappa 1436, kappa 1438.
Keywords: biography; daily life; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; mythology; proverbs
