Headword: Κερδώ
Adler number: kappa,1391
Translated headword: wily one
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
The vixen [is called this] as a nickname. [Formed] as Eidothea [gives] Eido, [and] Hypsipyle [gives] Hypso.
Greek Original:
Κερδώ: ὑποκοριστικῶς ἡ ἀλώπηξ. ὡς Εἰδοθέα, Εἰδώ, Ὑψιπύλη, Ὑψώ.
Notes:
cf. Hesychius kappa2316, and a scholion on Aristophanes, Knights 1068, where the word κερδώ occurs. It is cognate with κέρδος "gain, profit", and stems specifically -- in accordance with the principle of foreshortening exemplified in the present entry -- from the adjective κερδαλέη ; see already kappa 1382.
Hypocoristic feminine names are often formed by shortening the name and ending the nominative with omega (stem -oi-): see Smyth §279a (p. 71) at web address 1.
