Notes:
Aristophanes, Frogs 704 (web address 1), with the gloss of the scholia there; cf. kappa 2675. (Though the chorus has just been referring to sea-battles, here the phrase is indeed intended metaphorically.)
The phrase 'in the arms of the waves' (i.e. storm-tossed) is itself a quotation: Archilochus fr.213 IEG.
