Headword: *(ippo/porne
Adler number: iota,575
Translated headword: horse-whore
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Instead of 'super-whore'; [sc. used] rarely.[1]
Aristophanes [writes]: "and they say that Kallias the son of Hippofuckus fought at sea swathed in a lionskin of cunt-hair".[2] He made, on account of his licentiousness, a punning transformation of 'Hipponikos' to imply that he was whore-crazy. They employ 'horse' frequently in place of 'big': 'horse-whore'.[3] Kallias is lampooned continually as having frittered away his inherited wealth[4] and as being extremely crazy for women. [Aristophanes] coins all manner of words in reference to his decadence.

Notes:
[1] Likewise in Photius, Lexicon iota186. (Headword and gloss are vocative singulars.) The headword is taken by Theodoridis to be quoted from Menander, Theophoroumene 19; this supersedes Comica adespota fr. 1021 Kock (not in K.-A.), drawn from the present entry and the associated Aristophanic scholion: see below.
[2] Aristophanes, Frogs 428-430 (web address 1), followed by comment from the scholia there.
[3] (See also iota 571.) The quotation from Aristophanes does not employ the headword, but the lexicographer's train of thought is perhaps as follows: Aristophanes' joke name for Hipponikos is Hippobinos, translated here as 'Hippofuckus'. This name contains the element 'hipp-' which literally means 'horse' but which, in words like the headword, 'horse-whore', can simply connote 'big'.
