[Meaning] desire.[1]
"A fiery yearning came upon him to see Marcellus dead."[2]
Greek Original:
*(/imeros: h( e)piqumi/a. i(/meros au)to\n ei)sh=lqe dia/puros i)dei=n *ma/rkellon nekro/n.
Notes:
[1] ps.-Herodian 48 and other lexica; cf. scholion on Homer, Iliad 23.14 (and iota 350, iota 352, iota 353, iota 354).
[2] Adler's note reads: 'Polyb. 10.32.6 (falso Dam. fr. 250).' However, the phrase does not occur anywhere in Polybius 10.32 (on the death, in 208 BCE, of M. Claudius Marcellus), and the attribution to Damascius is taken over from Asmus by Zintzen (fr. 139). Nevertheless, Favuzzi latterly pursues the connection with Polybius' Marcellus, and an attribution to Aelian: see under epsilon 3944.
