Headword: *gru=
Adler number: gamma,461
Translated headword: grunt, ugh
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning something] short. But some [say it is] the crud from [under] the nails.[1]
Aristophanes in Wealth [writes]: "and responding to these things without even so much as an ugh."[2] Some [say the word comes] from 'grunting', that is the sound of pigs; or [that it is] a kind of small coin; or any old thing, the smallest thing. Whence come gru/th ['purse for odds and ends'] and gruto/pwlis ['odds-and-ends-saleswoman'] -- which is not spoken [properly this way], but grupo/pwlis.[3]
Also [sc. attested is] a proverb: "Dion's grunt", in reference to something small and inconsequential.[4]

[3] Perhaps a true assertion about the literature known to this scholar, but gruto/pwlis does occur on e.g. a papyrus of the C2 CE (Youtie 96.2).
