[1] Greek Anthology 7.1.1-2 (Alcaeus), an epitaph (quoted again more fully at eta 162) appearing on Homer's alleged tomb at Ios; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 6), (vol. II, 16-17), and a further extract from this epigram at chi 521. The reference is to Homer's death, according to legend, on the Aegean island of Ios (south of the Cyclades islands of Paros and Naxos, Barrington Atlas map 61 grid A4), when he could not answer the riddle posed to him by boys; see omicron 251.
[2] Quotation unattributable. (The adjective grifw/dhs is also used of Apollo, as a giver of obscure oracles, in Lucian, Jupiter Tragoedus 28 (Loeb edn. vol. 2, p. 130), where we should probably read it with an iota-subscript (grifw/|dhs) 'singer of riddles'.)
