became a general in the reign of Zeno.[1] [He was] a man to take risks and to make attempts readily on the enemy; but he did not have forethought in danger, nor did he take counsel before rushing towards what he strove to accomplish, but without consideration he proceeded to action and reckoned awesome forcefulness as the part of a man. This especially caused his downfall later on.

This Heraclius, also known as Heraclius of Edessa, recovered the province Tripolitana from the Vandals under Leo the Great (457-474 AD). In 471 he was involved in murdering Aspar, one of Leo's chief ministers (alpha 4201, alpha 3803), at the emperor's request; and, after Leo's death under Zeno (474-491), Heraclius, then magister militum per Thracias, was killed by Theodoric Strabo, perhaps because of involvement in the murder of Aspar.
This Heraclius was an ancestor of Heraclius the Elder, exarch of Africa under Phocas (602-610), and of his son Heraclius the Younger (see eta 465) who became Byzantine emperor (610-641) after Phocas was overthrown by the devices of Heraclius the Elder.
