Headword: *(hpatoskopi/a
Adler number: eta,419
Translated headword: liver
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Liver-inspecting. See under Persians.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] 'liver-inspecting', [meaning] the dissection of the entrails, by which they used to foretell what would happen; for in dissecting they would observe certain signs in the entrails.[2]
Greek Original:
*(=hpar. *(hpatoskopi/a. zh/tei e)n tw=| *pe/rsai. kai\ *)hpatoskopi/a, h( tw=n e)gka/twn a)natomh/, di' w(=n proemh/nuon ta\ sumbhso/mena: a)nate/mnontes ga\r shmei=a/ tina e)qew/roun e)n toi=s e)gka/tois.
Notes:
The primary headword "liver" is unglossed. (The SOL headword, mistakenly, is the secondary one, "liver-inspecting".) On the declension of h)=par, see h)=mar at eta 283 and skw=r at sigma 690.
[1] 'Persians' is a (rare) emendation by Adler for what the mss give as *Pe/rsh|, there being no such entry for the latter. However, pi 1367 is not an appropriate cross-reference; see rather (as Adler notes) mu 9.
[2] Perhaps, Adler suggests, from a scholion on Gregory of Nazianzus.
