Headword: *ei)/a
Adler number: epsiloniota,6
Translated headword: provender
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] fodder.
But h)/i+a [i.e. with an eta] [means] foodstuffs.
Greek Original:
*ei)/a: xo/rtos. *)/hi+a de\ brw/mata.
Notes:
Same entry in Photius and elsewhere.
This distinction between the headword -- not in LSJ -- and the very similar h)/i+a (trisyllabic, besides the initial eta) summarizes the more explicit one in Hesychius epsilon720, which glosses e)i+/a as "either fodder or its provision". Together with eta 140 (h)/i+on is "food for a journey"), the essence of the distinction seems to emerge as that between animals and humans.
