Headword: Ἐλευθέριος
Adler number: epsilon,804
Translated headword: of Freedom
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Zeus was called [this] for this reason, because freedmen [eleutheroi] built the portico near him.[1] So [says] Hyperides.[2] But Didymus maintains that it is not because of this, but because of the fact that the Athenians escaped subjection to the power of Persia.[3]
Some interpret "of Freedom" [ἐλευθέριος ] as "licentious" [ἄσωτος ]; and see under 'mastery'.[4]
