Headword: *)ekfulloforh=sai
Adler number: epsilon,722
Translated headword: to leaf out
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
['To leaf out'] and 'leafing-out'. If ever any of the citizens [sc. of classical Athens] appeared to be a wrongdoer and [thus] unworthy of belonging to the council of the 500, the council used to look into his case, [sc. to determine] whether he ought to be a councillor no longer but expelled from the synod altogether. Instead of the voting-pebble each man would indicate his opinion on leaves, just as in the ostracism [sc. this is done] on an ostrakon,[1] and this used to be referred to as leafing [him] out and a leafing-out. So Demosthenes in the [speech] Against Neaira.[2]

Notes:
See already epsilon 721.
There are some similarities of wording between this entry and Harpokration s.v.: see further below.
[1] Piece of broken pot: cf. omicron 716, omicron 717.
[2] No mention is made of ekphyllophoria in [Demosthenes] 59. Adler asserted that correct reference is Aeschines 1.111, which certainly does mention it. But another (better?) possibility is Dinarchus, Against Polyeuctus, the lost speech cited by Harpokration s.v.
