Headword: *)ekpolemw=sai
Adler number: epsilon,589
Translated headword: to provoke to war
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Used] with an accusative. Meaning to bring into war.[1] It is also written with eta [i.e. instead of omega], e)kpolemh=sai; in Xenophon for example.[2]
[The verb] e)kpolemh=sai is construed with an accusative.[3]
But e)kpolemw=sai [means] making enemies, as if spurring people into war.[4]
Greek Original:
*)ekpolemw=sai: ai)tiatikh=|. a)nti\ tou= ei)s po/lemon katasth=sai. gra/fetai de\ kai\ dia\ tou= h e)kpolemh=sai, w(s kai\ para\ *cenofw=nti. *)ekpolemh=sai sunta/ssetai meta\ ai)tiatikh=s. *)ekpolemw=sai de\ to\ polemi/ous poih=sai, oi(=on e)pi\ po/lemo/n tinas parocu=nai.
Notes:
After the initial grammatical point, the first part of this entry follows and abridges Harpokration s.v., who extracts this aorist infinitive from Demosthenes (1.7, 3.7) and also cites Thucydides and (see below) Xenophon.
[1] cf. pi 1893; see also epsilon 561.
[2] Harpok. cites book "6" (in fact 5.4.20) of the Hellenica for this; accordingly, the C19 scholar L. Dindorf (followed by E.C. Marchant in the OCT) seems to have been wrong to emend to e)/kpolemw/seie there.
[3] Despite this comment (and the differentiation in LSJ s.v.) it is not at all clear whether e)kpolemo/w and e)kpoleme/w meant substantively different things.
[4] Quoted from epsilon 1038, where in fact the prefix is different: e)mpolemw=sai.
