Headword: *eu)kle/i+son
Adler number: epsilon,3540
Translated headword: glorify
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning deem [something/someone] worthy of honour and glory. "Graciously glorify our family."[1]
Greek Original:
*eu)kle/i+son: a)nti\ tou= do/chs kai\ eu)klei/as a)ci/wson. pro/frwn a(mete/ran eu)kle/i+son genea/n.
Notes:
Same entry taken over by ps.-Zonaras (920). The headword, presumably extracted from the quotation given (see next note), is aorist imperative, second person singular, of the rare poetic verb eu)klei+/zw. For the glossing cf. generally Hesychius s.v. eu)klei+/zesqai (epsilon6937).
[1] Greek Anthology 6.269.6, attributed to Sappho. (The epigram is generally in Aeolic dialect, so probably the adjective should have smooth breathing and double mu (a)mmete/ran.) Other instances of this verb in Tyrtaeus and Pindar.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; ethics; gender and sexuality; poetry; religion; women
