Translated headword: they paid
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] they gave.[1] Aelian [writes]: "in return for which the Phocians paid very heavy penalties."[2]
Greek Original:
*)/etisan: e)/dwkan. *ai)liano/s: a)nq' w(=n oi( *fwkei=s e)/tisan di/kas baruta/tas.
Notes:
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras. The headword is third person plural, aorist indicative active, of the verb ti/nw (cf. epsilon 3321, epsilon 3323 and tau 640). It is probably extracted from the quotation given here, though there are numerous other instances, from Homer (Iliad 9.110) onwards.
[2] Aelian fr. 150 Domingo-Forasté, 147 Hercher (for the idiom cf. fr. 62f D-F, 59 Hercher, at pi 721), perhaps in reference to the fate of the Phocians in the Third Sacred War.
