From a gloss on Herodotus 3.69.4 (web address 1), where e)pi/lamptos (the Ionic version of e)pi/lhptos) occurs, in the story of the true and false Smerdis: "Now do this, whenever he lies with you and you see him sleeping, feel his ears; if it appears that he has ears, know that you are living with Smerdis son of Cyrus, if he does not have any, it is Smerdis the Magus. Phaedyme replied to him declaring that she would risk greatly if she did this; for if it happens that he had no ears, she will be caught (e)pi/lamptos) feeling, she knows well that he will kill her himself; nevertheless she will do this."
