Headword: *)epidouph=sai
Adler number: epsilon,2310
Translated headword: to make a thud on
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to make a thump on.[1] Also [sc. attested is the adjective] e)ri/gdoupos, [meaning] one who makes a loud noise.[2]
Menander [writes]: "the Avars in their battle-charge wanted to raise a confused and fierce noise, and along with their yelling to make a thud on their drums, so that the din would be raised so much that it would astonish and terrify the Roman army. Since Bonos knew this in advance, he forewarned the solidiers, so that they would not be dumbfounded by the melee, but imitating in advance what was going to happen, to be accustomed to what was to come by the similarity even before the event, and when they perceived the beating of the drums, they themselves would beat in return with their shields and shout the war-song and sing a paean and make a thump on the water-pots (which were made of wood)."[3]

Notes:
[1] The headword -- probably extracted from the quotation given later in the entry -- is aorist active infinitive of the verb e)pidoupe/w. (The glossing verb, e)piktupe/w, occurs again at the end of the entry.)
[2] Same glossing in ps.-Herodian; similar in Hesychius (s.v. e)rigdou/poisi) and, according to Adler, the Ambrosian Lexicon; and cf. epsilon 2285 and esp. epsilon 2980.
[3] Menander Protector fr. 12.3 Blockley, quoted in part at delta 150. For the general Bonos, see beta 495; on the Avars, see alpha 18. On war-chants and paeans, see epsilon 1498 and (e.g.) pi 841.
