Notes:
[1] The headword is imperfect of e)pai/rw, third person singular (distinguished from the aorist only by the iota subscript); cf. epsilon 1977, epsilon 2195, epsilon 2197. It is illustrated by both of the quotations given, though not necessarily generated by either of them: Latte on Hesychius epsilon4581, which has the first of the Suda's two glosses, claims the source as the Septuagint (4 Kingdoms 14.10).
[2] Aelian fr. 203c Domingo-Forasté (202 Hercher). The lovers referred to here are Chariton and Melanippos. The story of the attempt by these men on the life of the Sicilian tyrant Phalaris is told by Aelian, Varia Historia 2.4. The plot failed, but Phalaris displayed clemency by allowing the lovers to live in exile. Phalaris ruled Akragas c.570-554 BCE. See alpha 1812, alpha 2634, sigma 1501, phi 43.
[3] Part of Aelian fr. 102 Domingo-Forasté (99 Hercher). In reference to Asclepius and the Athenian comic poet Theopompus; see theta 171.
