Headword: *)ecplora/twr
Adler number: epsilon,1858
Translated headword: scout
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"These imperial scoutes[1] [sc. investigate] both cities and villages and other localities and the majority of the areas and [the] distances and locations of the roads, and what useful things for travellers each place does or does not have a good supply of, and whether they are able to support their population. For it is their job to be inquisitive about the state of affairs and what sort of anti-Roman opinions [sc. are held] by Persians, and to report [these things] to the emperor."

Notes:
The unglossed headword is a transliteration of Latin explorator.
The quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpti Constantini Porphyrogeniti) presumably comes from late historiography, but is unidentifiable beyond that.
[1] A deliberate misspelling of 'scouts' to reflect the incorrect form (exploratoi) used here, uniquely, for the plural of the headword. (The correct form, found elsewhere, is exploratores -- whether with omicron or omega as its second vowel.)
