Headword: *)echghtai/
Adler number: epsilon,1711
Translated headword: expounders
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
There are three Pythochrestoi[1], whose task it is to purify those in the grip of a certain curse. Also those expounding the ancestral customs.[2]
And Herodotus [writes]: "you are expounder of matters good for the house of the King, and all this advice of yours is sound".[3]
Expounder, in a special sense, [means] the man expounding the rites. There are also [rites] relating to what is named[4] for the dead, which they used to expound if need be.

See also epsilon 1710.
[1] Meaning chosen by the Pythia (at Delphi). In OCD(4) p.559 (s.v. exegetes) Kevin Clinton tacitly corrects this: in C4 BCE Athens, at any rate, there was a single Pythochrestos, and four of other kinds.
[2] For this opening section of the entry cf. Timaeus, Platonic Lexicon, and the scholia to Plato, Laws 916C.
[3] Herodotus 5.31.4 (Artaphrenes to Aristagoras).
[4] So the transmitted text, o)nomazo/mena; but -- as is clear from the Suda's source for this paragraph (Harpokration s.v., commenting on [Demosthenes] 47.68) -- it should be not o)nomazo/mena but nomizo/mena, "what is customary".
