Adler number: epsilon,1620
Translated headword: used to be quarried out
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"The earth used to be quarried out of the earth-hills of Dikaiarcheia."[1]
Greek Original:
*)ecelofi/zeto: h( de\ gh= e)k tw=n *dikaiarxei/as gewlo/fwn e)celofi/zeto.
Notes:
The unglossed headword, presumably extracted from the quotation given, is third person singular, imperfect middle/passive, of the otherwise unattested verb e)klofi/zw.
[1] Quotation (also in ps.-Zonaras) unidentifiable. (Adler assigns it to the corpus of quotations derived from missing parts of the Excerpta of Constantine Porphyrogenitus.) The "earth" in question is presumably pozzolana, a precursor of cement, mined in the vicinity of Dikaiarcheia (= Puteoli) in Campania, delta 1061. For "earth-hills" cf. gamma 162.
