Adler number: epsilon,1564

Vetting Status: high

Meaning [he] finding out, or [he] having suspended.
Also [sc. attested is] e)cartw=mai ["I am hung on"], [meaning] I am pierced through. Aristophanes [says]: "[am I not then pulling] and hung on, and getting to work, and doing my best?"[1]
And elsewhere: "in treaties of peace [he was] always hanging on reasons for war against the neighbors, with a treacherous intention."[2]
Greek Original:
*)ecarth/sas: a)nti\ tou= e)feuri/skwn, h)\ krema/sas. kai\ *)ecartw=mai, sumpe/parmai. *)aristofa/nhs: ka)cartw=mai, ka)pempi/ptw kai\ spouda/zw. kai\ au)=qis: e)n me\n ei)rhnikai=s spondai=s e)cartou/menos a)ei\ nw=| dolerw=| e)pi\ tou\s pe/las pole/mou ai)ti/as.
Notes:
The headword (evidently quoted from somewhere) is aorist participle, masculine nominative singular, of the verb e)carta/w; cf. epsilon 1748, epsilon 1749.
See also ps.-Zonaras 766.1, with the same glosses; cf. Etymologicum Gudianum 485.17 s.v. e)cartw=; to\ kremw= kai\ e)carth/santes to\ krema/santes. According to the Et. Gud., the word belongs to the technical language of navigation, as the ropes holding the sail-cloths in a ship were called e)ca/rtia.
See further below (final note).
[1] Aristophanes, Peace 470-1 (Trygaeus speaking), with scholion.
[2] Procopius, Secret History 18.29; the source reads e)n me\n ei)rh/nh| kai\ spondai=s e)cartuo/menos, with textual variants which arise from Byzantine pronunciation of the Greek words.
One could suppose that the first gloss was determined by a confusion with e)carti/sas/e)cartu/sas, or by the position of e)cartw= in the sources, probably very close to e)carti/zw and e)cartu/w, as shown by the Et. Gud..
