Adler number: epsilon,1107
Translated headword: of the sea
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] marine [things].[1]
Also [sc. attested is the variant] e)/nalon, [also meaning] marine.[2]
Greek Original:
*)ena/lia: qala/ssia. kai\ *)/enalon, qala/ssion.
Notes:
[1] = Synagoge epsilon374, Photius epsilon804; cf. Hesychius epsilon2627 which differs mainly in using the Attic dialect form for the gloss (qala/ttia). This headword is neuter plural of the adjective e)na/lios (also attested as ei)na/lios in epic and lyric poetry: cf. epsiloniota 153). Perhaps quoted from Euripides, Helen 1391: fe/rontes e)na/lia kteri/smata.
[2] Either masculine/feminine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative singular of this adjective. If the former, possibly extracted here from the Homeric Hymn to Apollo 180, where it refers to the city of Miletus. This form for e)na/lios is mostly used in poetry (Critias fr. 2.7 D., Euripides, Helen 1130, Electra 1348; Timotheus, Persians 109); in prose cf. Sextus Empiricus, Against Mathematicians 7.414.
