Headword: *diaphniki/sai
Adler number: delta,698
Translated headword: to pull the wig over
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to deceive. For the ancient Attic [sc. writers used to call] a prosthetic lock made out of of hairs a phni/kh.[1] And some say that the [verb] fenaki/sai ["to hoodwink"] [sc. gets its name] from this.[2]
Greek Original:
*diaphniki/sai: e)capath=sai. phni/khn ga\r oi( a)rxai=oi *)attikoi\ th\n e)k tw=n trixw=n periqeth\n ko/mhn. kai\ to\ fenaki/sai tine\s a)po\ tou/tou ei)rh=sqai le/gousin.
Notes:
Same or similar entries in other lexica. The headword is the aorist infinitive of diaphniki/zw. It is presumably extracted from somewhere -- probably Cratinus (fr. 282 Kock, now 304 K.-A.), to whom the grammarian Pausanias and, post-Suda, Etymologicum Magnum 269.31 attribute this very rare verb.
