Greek Original:
*diale/gousan: dioikodomou=san. le/gein ga\r to\ oi)kodomei=n. kai\ *diale/gou, dioru/ttou. *qoukudi/dhs.
Notes:
For this verb (LSJ entry at web address 1) see also delta 623, delta 624. The present headword -- its present active participle, feminine accusative singular -- is quoted from Aristophanes, Lysistrata 720: "[her] picking open the mouse-hole", sc. in the roof, to escape, but with the vagina as secondary meaning. Besides the hint in the scholia ad loc. (kakemfa/tws, "used in a vulgar way") see J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 141 #155, and 168-9 #295 on the verb.
[1] An uncomprehending gloss (again at lambda 225), already in Photius. The scholiast's dioru/ttousan, "digging through", is what is needed; cf. n.3 below.
[2] cf. lambda 225. At Homer, Odyssey 18.359, le/gein is used of picking up stones for building walls: see epsilon 77 (and n.4 below).
[3] Hesychius similarly defines diale/cai by dioru/cai (aorist active infinitives).
[4] Adler notes Dindorf's view that this 'Thucydides' refers to another gloss, and certainly it cannot relate to diale/gou; but epsilon 77 may provide the link.
