Headword: Δημώ
Adler number: delta,473
Translated headword: Demo
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A proper name. "Bauo had Demo as a guest."[1]
But δημῷ [2] [means] with fat.
Greek Original:
Δημώ: ὄνομα κύριον. ἐξένισεν ἡ Βαυὼ τὴν Δημώ. Δημῷ δὲ τῷ λίπει.
Notes:
[1] Clement of Alexandria, Protrepticus p.16.5 Staehlin; see already beta 195. In both entries, however, the Suda mss distort these names (from Eleusinian mythology): 'Demo' is Deo, i.e. Demeter (delta 483), and 'Bauo' is probably Baubo (cf. under delta 1598).
[2] An unrelated but similar-looking word, the dative singular of the noun δημός , a word commonly used in Homer (e.g. Iliad 23.750: web address 1) for animal fat. See already delta 453.
