Notes:
[1]
Polybius 25.3.1, omitting the adverb "immediately." See again
kappa 566 and
pi 1370, which include it; also
epsilon 840. (For this verb in
Polybius in another sense -- to play the noble Greek -- see 20.10.7.) Concerning
a)nanewsa/menos, "after renewing", here, Walbank (below) 178 quotes G. Daux to this effect: "
a)naneou=sqai (dont le Latin
renouare semble n'être qu'un calque sémantique) signifie presque toujours, dans cet emploi: donner une force nouvelle à un acte de caractère juridique (traité d'alliance, pacte d'amitié, décret, etc.) qui n'a pas été abolie, mais que les circonstances ont émoussé". See also Livy 40.58.9:
dum firmaret res, legatos Romam ad amicitiam paternam renouandam, petendumque ut rex ab senatu appellaretur misit. See also Walbank 275, discussing what
philia means in this content:
amicitia (informal friendship) or
foedus (a formal treaty). It would seem that in this connection in the Polybian text it means
amicitia rather than anything more. Since Philip's time there was already a treaty in effect with the Romans.
Diodorus also uses
philia (29.30) in his description of the same situation (following
Polybius?).
