Headword: *duskle/a
Adler number: delta,1646
Translated headword: in bad repute, disgraced
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Homer pronounces such [words] by shortening [sc. of a long vowel]. "To come to Argos [Myth, Place] in bad repute." And [sc. the same is true of] a)kle/a ["without repute"], meaning without reputation. But the Attic [Greeks] lengthen [the short syllable].
Greek Original:
*duskle/a: *(/omhros kata\ sustolh\n e)kfe/rei ta\ toiau=ta. duskle/a *)/argos i(ke/sqai. kai\ a)kle/a, a)nti\ tou= a)/docon. oi( de\ *)attikoi\ e)ktei/nousi.
Notes:
Largely from the scholia to Homer, Iliad 2.115, where the quoted phrase occurs. The hiatus shows that the original formula must have had duskleve/' *)/argos with a digamma and the final alpha elided. The Attic accusative dusklea= with long final alpha (as in Euripides, Hippolytus 405) is a contraction of dusklee/a from *duskleve/a.
