Headword: *xala/sai
Adler number: chi,8
Translated headword: to loosen
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to be untied, to be slackened. "[that] water falling out of the sky loosened the [bow-]strings of the foreigners, softened the horns of the bows,[1] and took away the force and accuracy of the archery."[2]
Greek Original:
*xala/sai: e)kluqh=nai, xaunwqh=nai. u(/dwr e)c ou)ranou= e)mpi=pton xala/sai me\n toi=s barba/rois ta\s neura/s, mala/cai de\ tw=n to/cwn ta\ ke/rata, a)fele/sqai de\ to\ bi/aion kai\ to\ e)pi/skopon th=s tocei/as.
Notes:
The headword, aorist active infinitive of xala/zw, is presumably extracted from the quotation.
[1] Ancient bows were often fashioned from two joined horns.
[2] Quotation unidentifiable, but connected by the C19 Suda editor G. Bernhardy with epsilon 2581, q.v. Be that as it may, a quotation of the same passage (with less at the end but more at the beginning) has already appeared at sigma 635. The verbs in the quotation are infinitives, suggesting that in the original the statement was in indirect discourse.
