Headword: *xrew/n
Adler number: chi,461
Translated headword: necessity
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
That which is destined, life's end.[1]
Aelian [writes]: "when he came to old age, he paid in full the necessity that is common to destiny and met with a fitting funeral."[2]
The [word] "necessity" is a participle, from xrw=, becoming xre/w, xre/on in the neuter. A slight alteration of the accent follows, and with Attic lengthening, the omicron is changed into omega and it is indeclinable. Adverbs [ending] in -on are written with omicron, except for xrew/n and e)mpodw/n ("in the way").[3]
