Likewise in Apostolius 4.75. Hesychius (beta312) and Appendix Proverbiorum 1.49 provide more detail: this proverbial expression was reportedly inscribed on a votive offering in the temple of Hera on Samos. All four sources allude to a controversy over whether the saying consists of one word or two, with the latter view prevailing. (The Appendix Proverbiorum interprets "Bata Karas" as meaning "Karas, son of Bata," which name--he says--appears in the actual inscription.)
