Notes:
The proverb -- Tosi [see under alpha 378] no.181 -- is quoted in one of the Exordia (Proems) of Demosthenes (48.2).
The present entry is a cut-down version of the one in Harpokration, where Sophocles (among his elegies: fr.2 West) is cited for the attribution to Solon. The Aristotle reference is to Nicomachean Ethics 1130a1; for Theophrastus, fr.737 Fortenbaugh. On Bias of Priene see beta 270.
