Headword: *)apoteqri/aken
Adler number: alpha,3586
Translated headword: has unpetalled
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning [he/she/it] plucked, made smooth. But properly [it means he/she/it] pruned fig-trees; for thria ["fig-leaves"] are the leaves of the fig-tree. Aristophanes [writes]: "which of the Odomanti has unpetalled his prick?"[1] The Odomanti [are] a Thracian people. The Thracians used to pluck and smooth their genitals and had them circumcised. They say that [the Thracians] are Jews.
Also [sc. attested is the participle] a)poteqruwme/noi ["they having gone to pieces"], [meaning they] having gone savage. This is said in a metaphor from rushes, tethrua, which are wild and sterile plants.[2]

Notes:
[1] Aristophanes, Acharnians 158 (web address 1); again at omicron 44 and pi 987. Scholiastic comment on that line (and line 156) is used here. See also J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 118, #37.
[2] (cf. tau 237.) Likewise in Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon, and similarly in Photius and elsewhere. This participle, transmitted here as a)poteqruwme/noi, is actually a)poteqrumme/noi, quoted from Plato, Republic 495E; see the scholia there.
