The headword participle is evidently quoted from somewhere (other than the quotation given, which has the corresponding aorist infinitive) but is otherwise unattested. For this verb see generally LSJ s.v. (web address 1).
[2] This quotation (again at
sigma 255) must come from a history of
Spain in the C1 BCE and the campaigning of Quintus Sertorius (OCD(4) p.1354) there. Adler tentatively assigned it to Appian, on no stated basis. Now Favuzzi [see under
alpha 1596] 211-212 finds vocabulary-based grounds for an attribution to John of
Antioch, drawing on
Cassius Dio.
