A market-town in Latium (central Italy), in the Pomptine marshes, on the Appian Way; Barrington Atlas map 43 grid E4; present-day Faiti. It was founded by the censor Appius Claudius, when he had the Appian Way built (see alpha 3199). Later the Roman Christians met Paul the Apostle at Forum Appii (Acts 28.15).
The Greek noun phoros had a meaning of its own (see phi 613) but also served to transliterate the Latin forum (see phi 614).
