Headword: *)anqosmi/as
Adler number: alpha,2518
Translated headword: flower-smelling, redolent of flowers
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Referring to a] wine of fine bouquet.[1]
[Meaning] fragrant. From a place [called] Anthosmion;[2] or as if from a type of vine, or [meaning] sweet and fragrant and flowery.
Anthosmias, [referring to a] wine of fine bouquet, with the flower and the scent included in [it]. By derivation anthosmios [sc. gives rise to] anthosmias; they used to call coarse wine headache-inducing.[3] Aristophanes in Frogs [writes]: "Dionysus, you're drinking a wine which does not have a fine bouquet."[4] Meaning you are drunk, you are hungover, from drinking harsh wine.[5]
anthos is also said to be white hair, hence phalanthos, a bald patch, a bald pate.[6]

Notes:
cf. generally Xenophon, Hellenica 6.2.6.
[1] Similarly in other lexica; references at Photius alpha1964 Theodoridis.
[2] No such place is attested; in any case this line of explanation is an unnecessary attempt to parallel alpha 1268, alpha 2506, etc.
[3] cf. kappa 382; also kappa 377 and kappa 378.
[4] Aristophanes, Frogs 1150 (web address 1), with scholion.
[5] Dover (below) 334 regards it as uncertain whether this is the correct explanation; an alternative would be "you stink".
[6] cf. phi 41.
