It is the eighth month amongst Athenians, sacred to Dionysus. It is so called because most things bloom (anthein) from the earth at that time.

Ἀνθεστηριών: ὄγδοος μήν ἐστι παρ' Ἀθηναίοις, ἱερὸς Διονύσου. κεκλῆσθαι δὲ αὐτὸν οὕτως, διὰ τὸ πλεῖστα τῶν ἐκ γῆς ἀνθεῖν τότε.
