Note:
There is another allusion to this episode (from the Celtiberian or "Fiery" War, of the mid C2 BCE) in
kappa 2254, the general in question being Marcus Claudius Marcellus (consul 152 BCE). The source is
Polybius fr. 110 Büttner-Wobst; cf. 35.2.2 (web address 1). Although the surviving fragments of
Polybius are hard to reconcile with the interpretation of the quotation given here, Marcus waged war against the Lusitanians after agreeing to what later seemed to be a pusillanimous truce with certain troublesome Celtiberian tribes.
