Headword: *)ana/keion
Adler number: alpha,1897
Translated headword: Anakeion, Anaceum
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A mountain [of that name].[1]
Or the shrine of the Dioscuri.[2]
Greek Original:
*)ana/keion: o)/ros. h)\ to\ tw=n *dioskou/rwn i(ero/n.
Notes:
Derived (and debased: see next note) from Harpokration s.v. That entry is generated by the appearance of the headword in Demosthenes (= Apollodorus) 45.80: its mention, as one of the places in Athens where slaves were sold, harks back to Phormio's servile origins.
[1] So the transmitted gloss, o)/ros, but Harpok. shows that it should be a)na/ktoron, "a shrine".
[2] On the Dioscuri or Anakes ("Lords"), i.e. Castor and Pollux, see generally OCD(4) s.v. (p.466), and delta 1209.
