Of Chios.[1] Rhetor. Son of Damasistratus. He lived in the time when the Athenian archonship was suspended, in the 93rd Olympiad,[2] at the same time as Ephorus,[3] the pupil of Isocrates.[4] He wrote an epitome of Herodotus' histories in 2 books; Philippica in 72 books;[5] History of Greece -- they are a sequel to those of Thucydides and Xenophon, and are in 11 books, comprising events from the Peloponnesian War and so on. He wrote a very large number of other works as well.

[2] The 93rd Olympiad spanned the years 408-405, and the Athenian anarchia was the year 404/3, when democracy in Athens gave way to the rule of the Thirty Tyrants. An alternative tradition, preferred by most modern scholars, puts the birth of Theopompus much later, in c.377. For doubts about the reliability of either, see M.A. Flower, Theopompus of Chios (Oxford 1994) 14-17.
[3] epsilon 3953: Ephorus.
[4] iota 652: Isocrates.
[5] 58, rather.
